“CHRIST*MAS: The WORD Made Flesh!”

"...this child that you delivered will soon deliver you..."

“…this child that you delivered will soon deliver you…”

Just think of it: The ALMIGHTY GOD OF THE UNIVERSE—That which has no end or beginning—that which has always existed, who created everything out of of nothing. THE GREAT I AM! The ONE who is, who was, who is to come. The OTHER, who created billions of galaxies that no one can fathom….this GOD BECAME FLESH and lived among us……….SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS!!!

...the Word b e c o m i n g flesh...

…the Word b e c o m i n g flesh…

Genesis 1:1-3   ~ 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

god's hands creating
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
let there be light
John 1:1,14 ~ 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. …….14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
And amazement on top of miracle, this ALMIGHTY GOD OF THE UNIVERSE chose a young teenage virgin girl to be its mother…and to be born in a barn because there was no room for them anywhere else.
The WORD BECAME FLESH! Wow! Beyond words, as Paul helps us in his letter to the Romans, chapter 8, not only do we often not know how to pray, but we can’t even begin to fathom this mystery and the Holy Spirit comes and intercedes for us with signs and groans too deep for words.
If we are confused, just think of Mary & Joseph?!!! And thank God for His messengers: the Angel Gabriel and Heavenly Angels praising God and telling the shepherds to go and see this great thing which has come to pass which shall be for ALL people.  Thank God for all the witnesses of the faith that kept encouraging them that this God of the Universe, the Great I AM, truly has been born as the savior of all mankind—-born not just for others and the lost sea of humanity—-
~ ISAIAH 9:6 ~
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Cursing the Darkness, or, Lighting a Candle???

Did you know who first spoke this great phrase?????

I’ve also always loved the phrase: “It’s easy to blow out a candle, but if you don’t blow it out, pretty soon the whole house is on fire!!!!”  This refers to the destructive nature of anger gone wild! Anger is an emotion, not good or bad, yet needs to be controlled. Lighting a match represents anger; its not difficult to blow out that match, or get one’s initial anger under control. But if it’s not dealt with, the results can be devastating! And, like the Smokey the Bear’s mantra reminds us: “Only YOU, can prevent forest fires!!

ADVENT is a time of preparing, of hearing the story (HISTORY), of reveling in the miraculous story (Mystery), and of wanting to receive all that the story offers (GLORY). With Christmas being the most commercialized holiday of the year, many believe it’s more blessed to receive than to give. PRESENTS or PRESENCE???? Rather than receiving gifts that others do not need or even want, many would simply prefer their loved ones undivided presence—truly being heard and listened to, giving them our quality time. And all this is provided in the true miracle of Christmas!

However you understand the mystery of God, or your Higher Power, some of the very best Christmas and year-round-gifts we can receive are: Love, Joy, Peace, Hope.

Having been blessed to bring over 100 pilgrims to the Holy-land (Israel and Jordan) over the past 25 years, I have come to understand ‘The God Thing’ in my belief system in a simple yet profound way. God comes to me in the HISTORY of the Manger; in the MYSTERY of His Living Word ; and in the Glory of His Second Coming to us, or our going to Him in death—LIFE after life!

This picture is worth a thousand words; it combines HISTORY with MYSTERY.  Christ is GOD IN THE FLESH—Emmanuel, ‘God With Us!” Unfathomable! As the song ‘Mary Did You Know” states, “When you’ve kissed this little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God!” And, “This child that you’re delivering, will soon deliver you!” Mary did you know???? Do we know? It’s helpful to put this season into perspective when we realize there was always the shadow of the cross upon the manger.

I love the parallel, the ‘bookends’ of Genesis chapter one in the Old Testament, with John’s  Gospel, chapter one, in the New Testament. Genesis. the “Book of Beginnings” begins with darkness, with the earth being formless and void…but there was that ‘wind’—that “Spirit of God” hovering over the face of the waters.”

There was darkness, chaos, emptiness, and void…..and God spoke the WORD, the Living Word…and all things were created. In John’s Gospel, we are told that this Living Word is God, who became flesh for us (Christmas) and lived among us, and gave us the power and grace to become His children. And the great news in John 3:16-18 is that God did not send His Son into the world to judge or condemn the world, but that all might be saved through Him, receiving that light and not hiding  any longer in the darkness.

Cursing the darkness or lighting a candle??? Let me close with another story, that might seem so different from the rest of these words but it speaks loudly to me at this time. C.S. Lewis, former atheist turned Christian author and inspiring millions over the decades, wrote:

I’ve been able to see most of the ‘Holy” sites in Israel and Jordan over the years, from the Mount Pisgah, outside of Aman, Jordan, where Moses was only able to look into the Holy Land and not cross over, to the two Holy Sites (Protestant and Catholic) of the Cross and the Empty Tomb. But there’s another site that is equally overwhelming, one that all Israeli’s have to visit twice in their life time during grade school and as adults, and that is the Holocaust Museum “Yad Vashem” in Jerusalem. They need to visit, so they, and the world, will never forget.

The Holocaust Museum has an amazing and heart-wrenching ‘Children’s Memorial Museum”.

This unique memorial, hollowed out from an underground cavern, is a tribute to the approximately 1.5 million Jewish children who were murdered during the Holocaust. Memorial candles, a customary Jewish tradition to remember the dead, are reflected infinitely in a dark and somber space, creating the impression of millions of stars shining in the firmament.

The names of murdered children, their ages and countries of origin can be heard in the background. The children’s names are taken from Pages of Testimony in the Hall of Names, Yad Vashem. The Children’s Memorial was built with the generous donation of Abe and Edita Spiegel, whose son Uziel was murdered in Auschwitz at the age of two and a half.

Yes, thank God, we all have been given the power to light a candle rather than cursing the darkness. Perhaps the real question is, are we going to take the LIGHT we’ve been given, and share it with others who may be living in darkness or in terrible need of a little light in their lives? This is Christmas! Let it be said of us: “They so loved the world that they gave…….” There is a candle that is lit in us, and so many others that need to be lit in them……

“GO LIGHT YOUR WORLD” by Kathy Toccoli

There is a candle in every soul

Some brightly burning, some dark and cold
There is a Spirit who brings fire
Ignites a candle and makes His home

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

Frustrated brother, see how he’s tried to
Light his own candle some other way
See now your sister, she’s been robbed and lied to
Still holds a candle without a flame

Carry your candle, run to the darkness

Seek out the lonely, the tired and worn

Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

We are a family whose hearts are blazing
So let’s raise our candles and light up the sky
Praying to our Father, in the name of Jesus
Make us a beacon in darkest times

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, deceived and poor
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world
